The basics of Protein

Protein is in every cell of the body, no protein, no life!

Water is the only thing the body has more of than protein, yet the majority of people fail to consume enough protein or water.

Protein is essential for growth and repair, but has several other functions in the body. You will not increase muscle mass (essential for the “toned” look so many people want to achieve) without consuming enough protein.

You may be surprised to know that although not the primary energy source of the body a gram of protein provides as much energy as a gram of carbohydrate, 4 calories. You can overeat protein (in terms of fat loss) just as you can fats and carbs!

Proteins are made of amino acids. There are 9 essential amino acids which humans must obtain from their diet highlighting why a varied diet is essential to health. Chicken, broccoli and rice 6 times a day may get you the fat loss you want but it is not optimal for health!

Sources of protein are; meat, fish, shellfish, eggs, dairy products, grains, legumes and nuts. Protein shakes and amino drinks are made from several of these sources e.g. pea, beef and whey(milk) powders.

There are many variables to consider when it comes to how much protein you should be consuming daily to achieve your fitness goals so please get in touch to find out how I can help you with this.
