Personal Trainers are not cheap and nor should they be. You are paying for the fact that they have invested their own time and money in developing the skills and knowledge needed to help you reach your goals not just the hour(s) you spend with them. You are also paying for their time outside of that hour when they are developing your programme and reviewing your progress. They should be accessible to you (within reason) for continual help and support. I am confident that I offer good value to my clients and that I am adequately recompensed for the time and effort I put in, everybody wins! If a potential PT can’t explain their pricing or you feel they are offering you the world on a stick for peanuts, walk away!
As a minimum they should offer:
A free consultation to listen to what your goals are, the problems you are having achieving them and to explain how they would help you
A thorough assessment of your health, lifestyle, current nutrition and training
A training & nutrition plan customised to meet your individual needs which is regularly reviewed based on your progress towards your goals
Education to ensure you have all the tools you need to meet your goals
Whether face to face or via skype etc it is essential you have this consultation to ensure you are confident that the PT understands what you want to achieve, your limiting factors, they have the skills and knowledge you need and most important, that you can build a rapport with them as communication between Coach and Trainee is essential to getting results.
If you already use the Gym where you are looking to find your PT, you have the perfect opportunity to observe the PTs at work. Do they look professional, bored, interested in and paying attention to what their client is doing, do their clients look motivated and interested in the information the PT should be giving them, do they share the results they achieve with their clients?
It goes without saying that a PT should have an NVQ level 3 Personal Trainer Certificate equivalent or higher and public liability insurance to protect the health and wellbeing of their clients. However, this is a minimum, they should be able to tell you how they have, and continue to further their knowledge and skills. They should be passionate about what they do and be able to explain how they treat their clients like individuals. Trust your instincts, you should walk away from that meeting excited and motivated to start working with them and confident that they can give you the information and support you need!
