Macronutrients are the 3 main groups of food required by the body to function optimally, protein, fats and carbohydrates. Your body can function without carbohydrates but there are few cases where I would recommend it! (I will explain why in a later blog).
When looking to improve your diet for health, sport performance or aesthetic goals, not understanding macronutrients is like trying to service your car without any understanding of how an engine works!
As well as performing many functions essential to health all 3 macronutrients supply the body with calories (unit of energy). Not being aware of how many calories you are putting in versus how many your body is burning is like not checking your bank balance for a year then wondering why you are overdrawn! This applies to whether you are looking to maintain or lose fat or maintain or gain muscle mass.
If you think you don’t have time to track your macronutrients even just occasionally for a greater awareness of what you’re eating, consider this;
“Those who think they have no time for healthy eating will sooner or later have to find time for illness” Edward Stanley
According to shocking 2015 NHS statistics, 58% of women and 68% of men were overweight or obese! Helping you have greater understanding of nutrition starting with calories and macronutrients is the obvious place to start with my nutrition blogs.
